In Bed with the Romans

Paul Chrystal

Discover the truth about Roman life behind the bedroom curtains. The first half of this book tackles various subjects of sex and sexuality. From the beds of wealthy Romans, to those of the soldiers of Rome, and even the beds of gladiators. This first section also covers various other subjects: such as, rape, cross-dressing, same-sex marriage and sexual language. The second half examines the proclivities of some of Rome’s ruling elite (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula and more).

A well-written and heavily researched book with a twenty-five page bibliography, very well researched.

The author is well-versed in the subject of ancient sex and sexuality; producing a sister-book: ‘In Bed with the Ancient Greeks’. This book highlights many of the same themes discussed in ‘In Bed with the Romans’ from the Greek perspective. The Romans idolised and romanticised much of Greek life and adapted and adopted many of their practices. Therefore, the Greek perspective is often important when considering the Roman era. Why not read the two in tandem?
