Women at War in the Classical World

Paul Chrystal

The problem with women in antiquity? We have very few sources from actual women in antiquity. The author has tackled this issue by taking a massive array of sources and producing a well-researched book that analyses the lives of Greco-Roman women from all walks of life.

It is important to note that this is a book about women in the classical world rather than specifically women in the Roman world. However, naturally there is a large overlap, and around 30% of the book is solely focused on women in ancient Rome.

Who is this book ideal for? Well, first of all, those interested in the history of women in antiquity and/or warfare. Secondly, I would argue this is also perfect for those who have a general interest in the ancient world; the book looks at the subject through the lenses of women in theatre, mythology and factual history; providing the reader with access to several aspects of female Roman history.
